Double ship-setting at Anundshög, Sweden

Title

Double ship-setting at Anundshög, Sweden

Subject

Ship setting

Description

A double ship setting at the prehistoric burial mound at Anundshög in Sweden, the largest of 5 ship settings on the site. Many ship settings pre-date the Viking Age, but also occur up to the year 1000AD, and are associated with pre-Christian burial customs (the shiup setting sometimes containing remains). They may be thought of as substitutes for (or representative of) the ships used in burials, and of the journey to the afterlife.
