Viking ship discovered in Tennessee

The story of a Viking ship that was unearthed in Tennessee caused quite a stir when it broke. The World Daily News Report website featured a story about volunteers finding a Norse knarr, a type of merchant vessel. It claimed that carbon-dating had shown that the vessel dated to c.950-1050AD and that it could have carried 20-30 men. The report claimed that this showed that the Vikings had much wider trading links in North America than was previously thought. Unfortunately it was not true, although it was propagated as true by many people.

The World Daily News Report is a fauxtire news site that has announced the discovery of several Viking sites, including the ruins of a settlement near the Hudson River, and a Viking trading post in Western Australia (see next item in this exhibit).
