Project Summary

Is there a common European culture? What cultural developments can be seen within the last two generations? What role does the European Union play? Is language important for the culture of the partner countries and how is it changing? What role do globalization, the media, information and communication technologies play?
The students of the participating schools deal with these questions in bilingual project lessons in various subjects. They start with their personal experience, they do research in their personal environment and in their region, they get information from literature, the media, the Internet and they do interviews and surveys. After dealing with their own culture the students continue with comparative work. They reflect their own cultural background and that of their European partners. The students learn about Europe and its cultural diversity and its common interests. Thus the project helps to reduce xenophobia.
The structure of the project makes it necessary that parts of the project work can only be completed by exchanging information between the students of the participating schools: the students work together in small international groups (per email, forum) using English as a lingua franca. At every school, essential parts of the project are taught in English and material is collected for interdisciplinary, bilingual lessons. The students realize the importance of language and language learning for communication in Europe.
The results of the project work are published in the participating schools, the media and on a common Internet homepage of the project.
