<text>The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse from Iceland that developed from horses taken to Iceland by the original Viking settlers. It is small, often pony-sized, but very hardy.

Pagan Scandinavians ate horse meat as part of their religious observances. Hrafnkels saga tells how he had a horse that he held sacred to Freyr. It is recorded that the eating of horse flesh was banned in Iceland after the conversion to Christianity.

Horses were ridden, although some Vikings were reportedly too large to ride the diminutive horses of the time, such as Göngu-Hrólfr (Walker-Hrolf) who was the first ruler of Normandy.

Horse-fighting was a popular pastime for the Vikings. In a horse fight, two stallions would be set on each other, goaded on by their owners. The Icelandic sagas record a number of horse fights that ended badly, because one owner used his goad to hit the other owner. In the recorded instances, this led to feuds that could last generations.</text>

Pigs were a source of meat in the Viking Age. The domesticated pigs kept by Vikings were descended from the Eurasian Wild Boar and probably resembled wild boar more than modern pigs. The boar was a symbol of protection, appearing as a helmet crest on some pre-Viking Age helmets. While pig bones are common on farm sites, it is not known if they were kept as herds or individually, and their ritual function is unclear.

The mythical wild boar Sæhrímnir was the source of food for the Æsir and einherjar, being cooked each day and brought back to life to provide food for the next day.</text>

<text>Dogs are known from the Mesolithic period onwards in Scandinavia. They would have been used by the Vikings as guards, hunting animals, and even as pets. Dogs similar to the Norwegian Elkhound are known from the Mesolithic period, and remains of greyhounds have been found from as early as the Roman period. Sheepdog types have also been recovered.

Dogs, along with horses, are the only animals to be buried as whole bodies, and some have been given their own separate graves. Kristina Jennbert notes that four difference breeds of dog are known from examination of Iron Age remains in Scandinavia.

The dog Garmr guarded the gates of Hel in Norse mythology, and the goddess Frigg is said to have traveled in a cart pulled by a pack of dogs.

Dogs are depicted on several runestones too.</text>

<text>Norse myths and medieval sagas have been the source for “popular” cultural trends since the first nationalistic approach of the Romantics in 19th century Europe. Today, such Norse-based representations have established a distinct visual and thematic identity within popular culture transcending national and cultural boundaries. Through study of the source myths combined with theoretical analysis of various popular texts such as fantasy and graphic novels, comic books, film, music, video games and MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), this module will guide students to situate these depictions within a larger theoretical framework of Nordic studies and cultural theory, while simultaneously enabling them to analyse their own relationship with the various representations of the “popular Norse”.</text>
