Copy of Hørningstenen runestone at Vikingemuseet (Viking Museum) Århus Denmark www.vikingemuseet.dk. Original at Moesgård Museum Århus www.moesgaardmuseum.dk. Original discovered 1849 by a farmer on his land between Jelling and Århus. Erected by a freed slave. <br /><br />According to the <em>Samnordisk runtextdatabas</em> the inscription reads:<br /><br /> <strong>tuki : smiþr : riþ : stin : ift ¶ þurkisl : kuþmutaR : sun : is : hanum ¶ kaf : kul : uk : frialsi</strong> <br /><br /><em>Tóki Smiðr reisti stein ept Þorgísl Guðmundar son, er honum gaf gull(?) ok frelsi.</em> <br /><br />Tóki Smith raised the stone in memory of Þorgísl Guðmundr's son, who gave him gold(?) and freedom.

The Hørning stone (DR 58) was carved by an emancipated slave in honour of his master. The inscription reads:<br /> tuki : smiþr : riþ : stin : ift ¶ þurkisl : kuþmutaR : sun : is : hanum ¶ kaf : kul : uk : frialsi<br />Toki Smiþr resþi sten æft Þorgisl GuþmundaR sun, æs hanum gaf gul(?) ok frælsi.<br /> Tóki Smiðr reisti stein ept Þorgísl Guðmundar son, er honum gaf gull(?) ok frelsi.<br />(Text taken from <a href="http://www.nordiska.uu.se/forskn/samnord.htm/?languageId=1" target="_blank">Samnordisk runtextdatabas</a>)<br /><br />This translates as:<br />Toki the smith raised this stone in memory of Thorgisl, son of Gudmund, who gave him gold(?) and freedom.
