Performance of the Battle of Maldon by Leofwin
Poetry Performance
A Viking Army under Olaf Trygvasson had been raiding the eastern and southern coast of England in the summer of 991AD unmolested until Byrhtnoth, with the men of Essex, cornered it on Northey Island, near Maldon in August. The two armies faced each other across a narrow stretch of water, until, with the receding tide, Byrhtnoth invited the Vikings across to the mainland to do battle.
Byrhtnoth was killed, the English were defeated, and the Vikings began their infamous practice of demanding protection money, or 'Danegeld'. Byrhtnoth's bodyguard, however, stood fast among the wreckage of the army, and died to a man defending their fallen leader.
A poem was composed very shortly afterwards commemorating the heroic defeat, and the extract recited in the video evokes Byrhtnoth's response to the Vikings' demand for money. It was filmed at the causeway where the Vikings crossed to the mainland in 991

Forging a Viking Age Shield Boss
Documentary films
The following clip shows an attempt at reconstructing a Viking Age shield boss (type R564). The purpose of the forging was to better understand the various steps involved in shield boss construction processes by experimental archaeology.
This has served to bring out a number of new aspects in Viking Age round shield research (http://combatarchaeology.org/research-2/round-shields-and-martial-practices-of-the-viking-age/).
This part of the project was undertaken in collaboration with blacksmith Tord Bergelin (Thor's Forge) and the Holma Foundation.

Round Shields and Martial Practices of the Viking Age
Research project
From the website: 'The aim of this research project is thus to assess the extent to which the round shield can illuminate Viking Age martial practices. More specifically, the research employs a practice approach towards understanding Viking Age shields in terms of construction, combative conduct and the accompanying social implications. The investigation centers around ca. 40 shield remains from Viking Age Denmark, which have hitherto not been subjected to any comprehensive study. To shed further light on the subject, it has been found necessary to incorporate complementary data from experimental trials with a reconstructed round shield as well as iconographic and historical source material, preeminently from Norway, Sweden and Iceland.'
