Reconstructed Viking Ship 'Ottar' photographed at the Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde
Reconstructed Viking Ships
Ottar is a reconstruction of Skuldelev 1, an ocean-going cargo vessel from c. 1030 discovered in the Roskilde Fjord barrier along with several other Viking ships. Ottar was reconstructed by the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde using authentic materials and construction techniques, and is crewed by 6-15 people. It is a Knarr type ship that would have been used to transport cargo, including on longer journeys to Norse colonies in the British Isles, Iceland and Greenland. Though a small example of its type, Ottar is a very stable vessel with good cargo-carrying capacity. Reconstructed Viking Ship 'Helge Ask' photographed off the west coast of Sweden
Reconstructed Viking ships
The Helge Ask is an accurate reconstruction of the 17.5 meter warship Skuldelev 5, discovered in the Roskilde Fjord along with several other Viking Age ships that had been deliberately scuttled. The original (dating to c. 1040) is housed in the Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde, and the reconstruction sails with a crew of around 30. It is photographed here from the deck of the Sea Stallion, another reconstructed Viking ship with a crew of 65. The Sea Stallion (Havhingsten) Reconstructed Viking Ship in Rørvig Harbour
Reconstructed Viking Ships
Havhingsten fra Glendalough (The Sea Stallion from Glendalough) is an accurate reconstruction of the largest of the Skuldelev ships (Skuldelev 2), a 30m long warship. The ship was reconstructed by the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde using traditional materials and construction techniques, and sailed to Dublin and back in 2007-2008. It has a crew of 65 volunteers, who sail it at weekends and for a longer voyage in the summer, refining how it is sailed. Ghost of the Sea Stallion! At Dublinia
Viking Ships
The entrance to the Dublinia experience in Dublin features a scale replica of the prow of Havhingsten (The Sea Stallion from Glendalough) which is visible through the glass from the street outside Dublinia. The Sea Stallion is a reconstruction of the largest of the Skuldelev ships recovered from the Roskilde Fjord and displayed in the Viking Ship Museum. The Sea Stallion made its trip back to Dublin (where it was originally contstructed) in 2007.

The Sea Stallion (video of summer sailing 2016)
Viking ships
Every summer I sail the mighty Sea Stallion, a faithful replica of a viking warship. The three-week raid is packed with adventure, camaraderie, exhaustion, and tons upon tons of fun.
These are just a few moments of the awe inspiring trip, and they relay only a fraction of the experience, but there you go. If you want the whole package, you'll just have to come along!
