Description
An account of the resource
This is an interpretative reconstruction of vǫlva (or seeresse's) dwelling at Ribe VikingCenter. This building is inhabited by a re-enactor who holds pagan (or Ásatrú) beliefs, to add to the authenticity of the setting ant the rituals performed. The vǫlva (or 'wand carrier') was held in high regard, and practiced sorcery and prophecy. They are widely depicted in Norse literature including the poem Vǫluspá ('Prophecy of the Seeress'). For more information about the Center, see item #1007 and the official website

Reconstruction of a Níðstang outside the vǫlva's dwelling in Ribe VikingCenter. The Níðstang was a deeply insulting public act of scorn, and is represented in the sagas as a carved pole covered with a horse's head. An account of the resource
Blacksmithing was a vital trade in the Viking Age, producing everything from the tools for working the land, to the clinch-nails of Viking ships and expensive swords and mail. The blacksmith may also have been a revered figure, and associated with the legendary smiths Völundr and Regin. There is a blacksmith in residence at the Ribe VikingCenter, who carries out experiments with extracting iron from ore, and producing different items needed in the centre.

For more information about the Center, see item #1007 and the section on Blacksmithing on the Center's website

Ribe VikingeCenter was established in 1992, and is one of the World's leading centers for living history and experiencing the Viking past. It consists of three main areas representing different periods of Viking history: a recreation of a marketplace and harbour from the eighth century; a series of town houses from 825 AD; and a long-house with 5 connected buildings dating from 980 AD. Each of these areas is populated by re-enactors and volunteers pursuing traditional crafts.

As stated on the Ribe VikingCentre Website, the purpose of the Centre is "to communicate Ribe's Viking Age history by bringing it to life in our reconstructed environments". There is a focus on immersive environments, education through experience, volunteers engaging in authentic crafts and pursuits, and experimental archaeology.

Reconstructions have been carried out in close co-operation with Den Antikvariske Samling, and the Centre is continually developing new techniques, concepts and experiences to help communicate Denmark's Viking past.

The Center has also produced a series of educational videos about life in the Viking Age, and different crafts pursued at the centre.

More information available at the Official website

Description
An account of the resource
