Round Shields and Martial Practices of the Viking Age
Subject
The topic of the resource
Research project
Description
An account of the resource
From the website: 'The aim of this research project is thus to assess the extent to which the round shield can illuminate Viking Age martial practices. More specifically, the research employs a practice approach towards understanding Viking Age shields in terms of construction, combative conduct and the accompanying social implications. The investigation centers around ca. 40 shield remains from Viking Age Denmark, which have hitherto not been subjected to any comprehensive study. To shed further light on the subject, it has been found necessary to incorporate complementary data from experimental trials with a reconstructed round shield as well as iconographic and historical source material, preeminently from Norway, Sweden and Iceland.'

Forging a Viking Age Shield Boss
Description
An account of the resource
The following clip shows an attempt at reconstructing a Viking Age shield boss (type R564). The purpose of the forging was to better understand the various steps involved in shield boss construction processes by experimental archaeology.
This has served to bring out a number of new aspects in Viking Age round shield research (http://combatarchaeology.org/research-2/round-shields-and-martial-practices-of-the-viking-age/).
This part of the project was undertaken in collaboration with blacksmith Tord Bergelin (Thor's Forge) and the Holma Foundation.
Music: Sinklars Visa by Hamradun (https://www.facebook.com/Hamradun-1928680894023262/).

Official Website of the Up Helly Aa Festival in Shetland.
The Up Helly A' is a festival celebrated on the 24th day after Christmas in Shetland. The celebrations involve a parade of 1000 guizers led by a Jarl, and culminates in the burning of a galley (an elaborate replica of a Viking ship). The Up Helly A exhibition is open year round, and features the Viking-themed costumes used in the history of the festival, as well as a galley, the public proclamations published before the festival each year, and paintings of the festivities. Myklebust Round Barrows and Ship
Description
An account of the resource
The largest of five mounds at Myklebust, Nordfjordeid, Sogn og Fjordane in Norway contained the remains of the largest Viking Age ship found in Norway. It was excavated in 1874 by Anders Lorange, just 14 years before he died. Excavators found the remains of a 25m long ship. The ship had been burnt in situ, and the mound raised over it. When it was excavated, the burnt remains of weapons and 44 shield bosses were found, showing that the ship had 22 oars on each side. A copper kettle of possibly Irish origin was also found. It contained the burnt remains of a person. It was suggested that the discovery dated to the ninth or tenth century.
Excavations by Haakon Shetelig on the same site found the remains of eight other people in the other mounds, and another, more modest ship burial.
