The Reconstructed Viking Ship 'Viking' at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago
Reconstructed Viking Ships
One of the earliest reconstructions, the 'Viking' is a replica of the Gokstad ship and was built in Framnes Shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway in 1892-93. It sailed across the Atlantic to the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Viking is now preserved in Geneva, Illinois. The reconstructed Viking Ship 'Saga Oseberg' photographed at Roskilde
Reconstructed Viking Ships
Saga Oseberg is an exact replica of the early-ninth-century Oseberg ship, found in a burial mound in near Tønsberg in Vestfold, Norway. It is one of the best preserved Viking ships (virtually complete), and has a length of almost 22 meters. It was reconstructed in 2006, in a cooperation between the Viking Ship museums in Oslo and Roskilde. The washboard on board the Sea Stallion from Glendalough
Reconstructed Viking Ships
The gunwale of the Sea Stallion may have been fitted with a washboard, as pictured here. This helps to prevent excess water breaking over the side of the ship, particularly in big swell. Photograph of the beitass (stretching pole) and tack on the Sea Stallion
Reconstructed Viking Ships
The beitass is used to secure the lower corner of the sail - it is particularly important when sailing close to the wind, and takes significant force from the sail. A team of four are needed to move the beitass. Detail of the clinker-built construction of the Sea Stallion reconstructed Viking ship

Viking ships were clinker built, with the strakes overlapping and joined by clinch (or clinker) nails allowing for a degree of flexibility in the hull.
