Description
An account of the resource
The Vinland Map is a mappa mundi that depicts Vinland, the Viking name for America. It first came to light in 1957 when it was offered for sale by an anonymous private library. It was thought to date from the mid-fifteenth century, and to be based on a thirteenth century original.
If authentic, it would show that Europeans were aware of America before Columbus sailed there. However, opinion is divided on its authenticity, with the consensus currently erring towards agreement that it is not

Runic inscription from Heddal stave church dating from the 13th century.
Description
An account of the resource
This runic inscription can be found in the covered exterior passage, on the fourth wall-board to the right of the south portal. The inscription consists of five runes, two of which, according to Professor Magnus Olsen, may be disregarded as mere decorative flourish. What remains are the runes for MRN - which can be interpreted to mean: Maria 1242. The church was consecrated on the 25th of October, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
