It was excavated in 1874 by Anders Lorange, just 14 years before he died. Excavators found the remains of a 25m long ship. The ship had been burnt in situ, and the mound raised over it. When it was excavated, the burnt remains of weapons and 44 shield bosses were found, showing that the ship had 22 oars on each side. A copper kettle of possibly Irish origin was also found. It contained the burnt remains of a person. It was suggested that the discovery dated to the ninth or tenth century.\r\n\r\nExcavations by Haakon Shetelig on the same site found the remains of eight other people in the other mounds, and another, more modest ship burial."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"39"},["name","Creator"],["description","An entity primarily responsible for making the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1546"},["text","Kenneth Thanche"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"40"},["name","Date"],["description","A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1547"},["text","08/10/2012"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1548"},["text","Roughage"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"47"},["name","Rights"],["description","Information about rights held in and over the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1549"},["text","(c) Kenneth Thanche"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"38"},["name","Coverage"],["description","The spatial or temporal topic of the resource, the spatial applicability of the resource, or the jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1550"},["text","Viking Age, Norway, Ireland, 800 AD, 900 AD, Nordfjordeid, Sogn og Fjordane"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"49"},["name","Subject"],["description","The topic of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1551"},["text","Website - Archaeological Remains"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"45"},["name","Publisher"],["description","An entity responsible for making the resource available"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1552"},["text","The Megalithic Portal"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"42"},["name","Format"],["description","The file format, physical medium, or dimensions of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1553"},["text","Website"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"44"},["name","Language"],["description","A language of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1554"},["text","English"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"51"},["name","Type"],["description","The nature or genre of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"1555"},["text","Website"]]]]]]],["tagContainer",["tag",{"tagId":"48"},["name","Burial customs"]],["tag",{"tagId":"192"},["name","Burial Mound"]],["tag",{"tagId":"191"},["name","Burial Site"]],["tag",{"tagId":"216"},["name","Cremation burial"]],["tag",{"tagId":"7"},["name","Ireland"]],["tag",{"tagId":"215"},["name","Kettles"]],["tag",{"tagId":"94"},["name","Norway"]],["tag",{"tagId":"47"},["name","Seafaring"]],["tag",{"tagId":"217"},["name","Shields"]],["tag",{"tagId":"46"},["name","Ships"]],["tag",{"tagId":"50"},["name","Viking Age"]],["tag",{"tagId":"153"},["name","Weapons"]]]]]
