Demonstration of the bukkehorn (goat horn) by Einar Selvik in Somerville College
Performance - music
A demonstration of a reconstructed pipe made of goat-horn (bukkehorn) by musician Einar Selvik (of Wardruna) during the Old Norse Poetry in Performance (ONPIP) Conference at Somerville College, Oxford on Friday 24 June 2016. As Einar Selvik points out, the oldest find of a horn-instrument like this is a cowhorn from the early Iron Age, found in a bog in Konsterud, Värmland, Sweden dated to ca 500 BC. Another find can be dated to 900 AD, also found in a bog in Västerby, Hedemora, Sweden.

More information about the band and project can be found at http://wardruna.com/about/

Demonstration of a reconstructed horse-hair fiddle (Taglharpa) by Einar Selvik in Somerville College
Performance - music
A demonstration of a reconstructed horse-hair fiddle by musician Einar Selvik (of Wardruna) during the Old Norse Poetry in Performance (ONPIP) Conference at Somerville College, Oxford on Friday 24 June 2016. A fiddle-like instrument was discovered at Hedeby, but it was probably not a type common in Scandinavia. The earliest depiction is from a statue from the 1200´s in the oldest part of the cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. This instrument was common in Scandinavia, especially Finland, up until the early 1900s.

More information about the band and project can be found at http://wardruna.com/about/

Reconstruction
Wardruna is a musical project based on Nordic mythology and spirituality. As their website explains, they rework Norse poetry and narratives: "With the use of the oldest of Nordic instruments and poetic metres as well as lyrics written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue". The group was founded by Einar Selvik. The website features several audio clips and music videos.
