Subject

Exhibition
Description
An account of the resource
Replicas of placards used during the demonstrations against the development of the Wood Quay site in Dublin in the 1970s. Dublin City Council's Civic Offices were built on the site of Viking Dublin, after some of the most important excavations of a Viking-Age settlement had revealed the wealth of artefacts in the area and preservation of the original layout of the city. The protests did not succeed in stopping the development, but they did raise awareness of the public appetite for preserving national heritage.
This photo was taken by the Languages, Myths and Finds group during a visit to Dublinia.

Description
An account of the resource
Fishamble street is one of the oldest streets in Dublin, and dates back to the Viking longphort, which was established as a permanent settlement by 841. Fishamble street was in the eastern side of the settlement, with Winetavern Street marking the western side. Dublin City Council's Civic Offices now cover most of this area. Fishamble street saw excavations in the late 1970s and 80s which uncovered remarkably preserved building plots from the Viking town. Crafts undertaken in this area include wood and amber working, and many artefacts are on display in the National Museum of Ireland.

Description
An account of the resource
A Viking-Age ship burial from the late ninth century / early tenth century was excavated beneath this ship setting now marking out the site in Balladoole on the Isle of Man. It contained a rich burial of a high-status man and woman with a horse and grave goods. It was built directly above Christian graves of a similar date, and may represent an expression of the Norse settlers' control of a sacred landscape.
