Ship burials
A Viking-Age ship burial from the late ninth century / early tenth century was excavated beneath this ship setting now marking out the site in Balladoole on the Isle of Man. It contained a rich burial of a high-status man and woman with a horse and grave goods. It was built directly above Christian graves of a similar date, and may represent an expression of the Norse settlers' control of a sacred landscape.

News: 1300-year old boats, swords and jewellery found
News
Four boat burials and several other burials from the period immediately before the Viking Age were found after a chance metal detector find in Bitterstad, Norway. Excavations on the site showed that the boats were c. 8m long with room for 12 rowers. One grave contained swords and military gear, while another was a woman's grave with a large and expensive brooch, and colourful beads.

The largest of five mounds at Myklebust, Nordfjordeid, Sogn og Fjordane in Norway contained the remains of the largest Viking Age ship found in Norway. It was excavated in 1874 by Anders Lorange, just 14 years before he died. Excavators found the remains of a 25m long ship. The ship had been burnt in situ, and the mound raised over it. When it was excavated, the burnt remains of weapons and 44 shield bosses were found, showing that the ship had 22 oars on each side. A copper kettle of possibly Irish origin was also found. It contained the burnt remains of a person. It was suggested that the discovery dated to the ninth or tenth century.
Excavations by Haakon Shetelig on the same site found the remains of eight other people in the other mounds, and another, more modest ship burial.

Essay - Educational Resource
A study of burials of Norse migrants was trumpeted by the popular press as showing that half of all Viking warriors were women.1 This is not the case as Tracy V. Wilson <a href="http://www.missedinhistory.com/blog/raining-on-your-parade-about-those-women-viking-warriors/" target="_blank">explained on her blog</a>. The study focused on a small sample of Norse migrants and showed only that grave goods could not be relied upon to demonstrate the sex of the deceased.<br /><br />1. MCLEOD, S.
