3 fridge magnets
Description
An account of the resource
3 fridge magnets, 2 from Sweden and 1 from Norway. The two magnets to the left are probably from recent years, ( since 2010), while the one to far right is probably from 1980's. The magnets are classic examples of the stereotypical Viking with horned helmets, weapons, shields, and ships. It is interesting to note that the central magnet features a ship that is clearly based on the Oseberg ship. Fridge magnets bought in Sweden and Norway. Now on my fridge in Limerick Ireland

'Board Games in Boat Burials: Play in the Performance of Migration and Viking Age Mortuary Practice' by Mark A. Hall
Subject
The topic of the resource
Article
Description
An account of the resource
This contribution explores an aspect of boat burials in the second half of the first millennium ad across Northern Europe, specifically boat burials that included equipment for board games (surviving variously as boards and playing pieces, playing pieces only, or dice and playing pieces). Entangled aspects of identity, gender, cosmogony, performance, and commemoration are considered within a framework of cultural citation and connection between death and play. The crux of this article's citational thrust is the notion of quoting life in the rituals surrounding death. This was done both in the service of the deceased and in the service of those wanting to remember the deceased, the argument distills around the biographical trajectories or the different social and individual uses to which people put ostensibly simple things such as gaming pieces.

Description
An account of the resource
Bar named after the Vikings in this small town in A Coruña, near Santiago de Compostela. The Vikings did reach this part of Galicia, first raiding the coast in the mid ninth century, but the connection to the Vikings in this specific town is not particularly clear. It is more likely to be based on an international stereotype of the Vikings as big drinkers than a local response to heritage. Photo taken by Puk Faxe Sabinsky in 2014.

'Save Wood Quay' placards in Dublinia
Subject
The topic of the resource
Exhibition
Description
An account of the resource
Replicas of placards used during the demonstrations against the development of the Wood Quay site in Dublin in the 1970s. Dublin City Council's Civic Offices were built on the site of Viking Dublin, after some of the most important excavations of a Viking-Age settlement had revealed the wealth of artefacts in the area and preservation of the original layout of the city. The protests did not succeed in stopping the development, but they did raise awareness of the public appetite for preserving national heritage.
This photo was taken by the Languages, Myths and Finds group during a visit to Dublinia.

'Truso – the legend of the Baltic Sea' exhibition in the Museum of Archaeology and History in Elbląg
Description
An account of the resource
''Truso – the legend of the Baltic Sea' is the title of a new exhibition presented in the Museum of Archaeology and History in Elbląg. Until recently we knew Truso only from its name, which was written down by an Anglo-Saxon sailor Wulfstan. In the late 9th century he set off on his most important journey: from Hedeby in Denmark to Truso in the Vistula River estuary. Wulfstan's account of the journey was placed by Alfred the Great in his translation of Orosius' Chorography.'
