The "Devil of Oslo"

Title

The "Devil of Oslo"

Subject

Carving

Description

This relief is in the wall of Oslo cathedral. It depicts a man beset by beasts or devils, and was originally in St Hallvard's Cathedral. Iconographically, it is similar to the figure beset by beasts motif that is a feature of some earlier runestones and helmet plates. However, in the case of the runestones and helmet plates, the figure is usually depicted triumphing over the beasts, not suffering.
